raea (she/hers) is a queer leathergirl from the San Francisco Bay Area who started her path in the kink community in 1995 when she began attending events in Southern California. Since then, she has participated in her local community living throughout the country. raea was most active as a leathergirl when she began co-facilitating the San Francisco D/s Discussion group, ran the Santa Cruz Submissive Circle, was an active member of the Santa Clara County Leather Association, and volunteered for smOdyssey events and Northwest Leather Celebration.

In a house-building analogy, when you build a house, you always start with a foundation. The beautiful thing about foundations in rope is that you use it every time you pick up rope. This class, ROPE 101, starts with a lecture on rope vocabulary, materials, basic anatomy and physiology, and safety concerns. The class then moves into a hands-on workshop where we will practices tying a single column tie and demonstrate its applications.

Materials:
Students are encouraged to bring a safe cutting device and at least one (1) piece rope at least 15-30 ft long. Also suggested is a mat or blanket for sitting on the floor.

While kink should not be viewed as a substitute for traditional therapy, our bodies are capable of immense healing when we engage safely in kinky activities. There is evidence to suggest that engaging in physical experiences aids neuro-network changes quicker than verbal dialogue. For this to happen, the affected networks have to be engaged, safely.

Talking about trauma is required in order for us to practice a Safe, Sane, Consensual, and Informed (SSCI) lifestyle. It can be quite challenging to find a kink-friendly therapist who is also knowledgeable about BDSM culture; there is still a long way for mental health professionals to catch up with the understanding of kink and its potential for trauma healing. We’re often not able to share our lifestyle, and when we do, we are then pathologized for it.

Sustainable change within your submissive in an affirming way!

Power dynamics in personal relationships usually include some element of personal development on both sides. For example, a focus on the submissive’s personal discipline and accountability is typically negotiated through operant conditioning by the Master or Dominant. Operant Conditioning is Behaviorism. Behaviorism the theory that human and animal behavior can be explained in terms of conditioning, without appeal to thoughts or feelings, and that some mental conditions are best treated by altering behavior patterns.

Experts agree: when it comes to learning, rewards, and punishments don’t always lead to optimal results. In fact, rewards can reduce your interest in a task and weaken performance quality. Plus, offering these incentives may even be considered ableist or harmful to someone’s self-esteem. If our aim is to help submissives reach their fullest potential, it’s important to find more supportive strategies than those promoted by behaviorism back in the 1920s. Modern neuroscience emphasizes the importance of “upstairs” brain functioning for learning; if a task is too demanding or tense, we aren’t able to access this part of ourselves – which makes forming positive associations with something difficult. To really help submissives achieve their goals and reach their utmost potential, there are more effective strategies than mere rewards or punishments.

If we aspire to lift up and foster growth in submissives, it’s imperative that expectations are tailored to every individual. In doing so, we must be mindful of disabilities, neurotypes, or other barriers they may have. Setting an expectation that is inappropriate for a person’s disability, or not inclusive of all potential obstacles, makes it harder for them to reach the desired goal. The intersection between neurodivergent people and disabled people is well-documented within the kink community. Unfortunately, many of us have been/are still subject to cruel ableist systems that can lead to a lifetime of trauma and diminished self-worth.

This class is open to all – whether you’re a submissive or dominant, neurotypical and abled-bodied or neurodivergent and disabled. It’s an opportunity to learn new approaches to deepening your relationship dynamic.

During this class, we will cover everything from blood pressure to diabetes medications. First we will explore how a medication works and then take a look into how it may or may not cause problems for us during play. We will also discuss some ethical dilemmas that are likely to occur with certain types of prescription medications as they relate to consent.

Bio:

Lady Steele has served the Leather community since 1999 and presented and volunteered internationally. She resides in Atlanta where she operates her law practice that serves alternative lifestyles. She founded the Center of Learning and School of Success (C.L.A.S.S.), the Worthless Bastards (Cigar) Club (W.B.C. – Atlanta), and The Leather Coterie (T.L.C.). . Lady Steele has held various positions in both the former chapter of NLA – Atlanta and the Leather Leadership Conference. She continues to give back to the community through WINGS and by being a proud Associate Member of Onyx Pearls – Southern Leather.

Master Meta is a neurovariant Leatherman that has been in the BDSM community since 2010. He has traveled many paths to be where he is today, and he is happy to share his knowledge on various topics such as his “spicy” brain, leadership, mastery of self, Mastery while on a Leather path, needles, vampyrism, and many others.
